Lesson Procedures

During your lesson you will usually be saying or singing something aloud while you play; counting aloud or saying note names aloud. If the teacher is counting aloud you should count, too. If the teacher is saying note names, you should say them too. This is an important part of the learning process.  In fact, in my experience, students who eagerly say note names aloud when practicing move along much more quickly than those who are resistant to saying note names aloud.  Also, students who count their pieces aloud during practice quickly become used to doing so and are prepared to learn more complicated rhythms as they progress.

Short fingernails are required for playing the piano. Fingernails should be short enough that when you hold your hand up with the palm facing toward you, you cannot see your fingertips above your nails. Please come to each lesson with short nails. Acrylic and artificial nails have absolutely no place on piano hands. If a student appears for a lesson with artificial nails that lesson will not occur and will be forfeited.

Good posture and having your bench the correct height and distance from the piano are also critical to playing with good technique and avoiding fatigue at the keyboard. Please adjust your distance to the piano when you first sit down for your lesson.
