Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an acoustic piano to take piano lessons?

No, but you do need a keyboard instrument on which to practice at home.  An electronic keyboard will work just fine providing it has touch sensitive or weighted keys, a sustain pedal and has 88 keys, just like a piano.

Touch sensitive or weighted keys  mean that the student can vary the dynamic (volume) of the piano tone by using more or less weight when touching the keys.  More weight gives a louder tone, very little weight produces a soft tone.

A sustain pedal is often included with a new electronic keyboard or can sometimes be purchased as an accessory to a keyboard you already own. Please purchase the sustain pedal since the student will need it sooner rather than later.

A full size keyboard has the same number of keys and the same size of keys as an acoustic piano.
